🔥Quote/Prompt
What you are expecting determines whether you will or will not be able to see the possibilities all around you.
Use the quote as a writing or thinking prompt to finish your week strong.
A bit from mine:
(posted in our Doer Entrepreneurs Free Community — off social media)
Have you ever had the experience that the second you want something, you start seeing it everywhere? This is called the Baader-Meinhof phenomenon (or frequency illusion).
It's a trick our brains play that basically filter the world such that that thing appears more common than it actually is. But we can use this to our advantage.
It also means, just like this quote, that we will see the opportunities if we expect them.
So this week, what's one thing you want to see more of? Is it opportunity for sales? Collaboration? New opportunities to go a different direction with your business (even if you don't know what direction it is)?
Whatever it is, let's remind ourselves that our brains are filtering all the time so maybe it's worth spending a little energy tweaking that filter to work FOR us instead of against us.
Did someone forward this to you?
📈 Performance
I love that this article appeared in Psychology Today! The author offers 5 ways to leverage your time and asks — are you a doer or a flouderer? Read to find out. Here are two of my favorites of her five strategies:
2. Ask who, not how.
Dan Sullivan and Benjamin Hardy wrote a wonderful book with this very title, and in it, they write about how we often get stuck trying to solve problems that are better suited for someone else to fix. Instead of wasting precious time fixing the annoying leaking faucet, hire someone to do it (just because you can figure out anything with YouTube videos and duct tape doesn’t mean you should). Use that time on the activities and work you’re cut out for. People who get things done tend to delegate, hire, and barter rather than waste their precious time on things that would take them forever to figure out.
3. Create systems.
Are there things in your life that you find yourself doing over and over? By taking a bit of extra time on the front end to figure out how to automatize and systematize, you’ll save a ton of time in the future.
For example, I have a variety of email templates in a folder that are ready to use. Instead of rewriting the same things, I can just grab one, personalize it a bit, and send. People who automate and systematize don’t get bogged down with menial tasks and complain about all the time they’re wasting on emails, calls, or spreadsheets. They have all that extra time to devote to high-value work instead.
⚙️ Optimization
Not long ago I posted this on LinkedIn about what happens if you actually enjoy your work and don’t identify with the messaging pushing people to hurry up and retire no matter how much sacrifice it requires (FIRE) and several other problematic messages I see. And then I saw this article which is another story of many written where people start out with FIRE principles and then realize that time is more important. Time to spend with kids, etc.
If you’re not a Business Insider subscriber you won’t be able to read the full article this time. I usually don’t include paywall content but this was a must-read. If they have a trial or you are a subscriber, check it out. I think stories like this are more hidden than they should be. Below is an excerpt:
"When I was pursuing FIRE, I was trying to get to the lowest monthly cost possible," Berninger said. "Now that I found my passion, I want to have it all. I want to be able to give my kids time to see me."
[…]
In 2023, she also founded Auros Agency, a boutique digital course creation agency with a similar business model. However, as her "flexible but not passive" business became more involved, she spent less time with her two kids. She didn't want her kids in day care every day, but she also didn't want to sacrifice her business.
She began to outsource many daily tasks, such as dry cleaning, folding laundry, cooking, and landscaping. Her home payments were small because they had a large downpayment, and her and her husband's income allowed them to reduce their savings rate. She estimates her current savings rate is around 18% of her income, well below her past peak of saving 70% when starting her business, but she noted that her overall income is now much higher.
"If my goal was to stop working at 40, then I obviously wouldn't be doing all these things," she said. "I would be hanging out with my family, and I wouldn't be working. But I genuinely love everything I'm doing and have much bigger ambitions."
As of the end of May, Berninger spent slightly over $200,000 and made almost $250,000 gross so far in 2024, screenshots shared with BI show.
So if you’re someone who loves what you do and you want to have it all, just another reminder and story that shows you can. 🙂 #LoveWhatYouDo
⏲️ Time Management
I love this article. It talks a lot about not collecting productivity tips but just creating the right “rules” that work for YOU. Below are two of the author’s that I loved but he all 11 are worth a read!
Ditch the to-do list for a ‘first things’ list
The problem with most to-do lists is that they don’t take into account all the stuff you need to do them. “Do tax return” doesn’t work if you haven’t got your receipts in order; “sort out school application” doesn’t work if you don’t know whom to email.
With a “first things” list, you split an important task into smaller and smaller chunks until you are left with one “first thing” that you can do immediately (and preferably in less than two minutes). Make a list of those things when you sit down in the morning and it’s easy to start building momentum for the rest of the day.
Bonus suggestion: rather than crossing things off your list, put a checkbox next to each item. It takes about 10 seconds longer, but it’s easier to see what you have done – and it’s immensely satisfying.
Use the work-or-nothing rule
Raymond Chandler got a lot done. He didn’t start writing detective fiction seriously until the early 1930s, when he was in his 40s, but then wrote seven novels and a handful of screenplays, including two that were nominated for Academy Awards.
His advice? “The important thing is that there should be a space of time … when a professional writer doesn’t do anything else but write,” he once said. “He doesn’t have to write, and if he doesn’t feel like it, he shouldn’t try. He can look out of the window or stand on his head or writhe on the floor, but he is not to do any other positive thing, not read, write letters, glance at magazines or write cheques.”
Of course, in Chandler’s day, it was easier to avoid distraction; now, it’s likely that whatever device you are writing on can connect you with limitless amounts of stuff to distract you. One option is to work in notebooks or without a connection to the internet. Another is to …
💻 Tools & Technology
If you’re a Notion user, definitely be sure to read this article. It’s an interesting window into the direction the company is headed (and where it came from). That’s worth knowing if Notion is an important part of your system.
What are you working on next?
To me it’s about making it easier for people to get their work done fast. For example, can we show calendars in different ways within Notion and show documents within calendars and make it easier for people to bring a time layer into Notion and allow people to schedule things easier and be able to know what their next meeting is without having to constantly switch context and switch windows. […]
What other new elements of Notion are you working on?
We’re doing more work on the AI front. We’re improving on the performance of the app and making sure it can scale. We want to keep improving our mobile apps. We’re going to continue integrating Calendar into Notion. (Editor’s note: Notion acquired Cron and recently re-launched it as Notion Calendar.) I don’t want to say too much more and get fired.
🤖 AI
I think this article is worth including but I have a main question before we explore it — Does it actually matter? Isn’t where we are headed kind of already generative enough even if it doesn’t fully qualify as ‘nearly human’? We all still need to be keeping our fingers on the pulse of these technologies but it’s also worth knowing what people, and especially someone like this author thinks: Richie Etwaru is Co-founder & CEO at Mobeus. He's also a former CTO, CDO & CIO at Fortune 500 firms in Financial Services and Healthcare.
Let’s take a look and it’s also a good reminder to us that there will always be a place for humans, we just need to keep an eye on AI so we understand exactly what that looks like. Excerpt below.
The Impossibility Of AGI
Although the dream of creating an AGI continues to inspire and motivate researchers, the overwhelming evidence suggests that such a goal is unlikely to be achieved. Human intelligence is a unique and multifaceted phenomenon that arises from our collective knowledge, cognitive complexity and embodied experiences. The limitations of current AI technologies, coupled with the profound challenges of replicating the evolutionary processes that shaped human intelligence, make the prospect of AGI highly improbable.
As we continue to advance in the field of artificial intelligence, it's crucial to recognize and appreciate the unique qualities of human cognition. Rather than striving to create machines that mimic our intelligence, we should focus on developing technologies that complement and enhance our capabilities, fostering a future where machines focus on being helpful to humans instead of being as or more intelligent than us.
👀 Read, Watch, Listen
This week’s awesome books, YouTube videos, newsletters, etc. to add to your list!
This book came up in one of the articles above so it’s worth including as a recommendation. It’s also just frankly a wonderful book for anyone who has a tendency to just dig in and do everything themselves (guilty!🙋♀️).
This book introduces a paradigm shift in goal achievement and business growth. Instead of asking "How can I do this?", the author, Dan Sullivan, encourages readers to ask "Who can do this for me?" This simple change in mindset opens up possibilities for delegating tasks, building effective teams, and achieving more with less personal effort. The book promises to teach readers how to:
Build successful businesses without burnout
Free up significant time
Overcome limitations of age and societal norms
Expand vision and ambition
Increase wealth, innovation, relationships, and joy
Create a life of choice and freedom
By focusing on connections with others, readers can unlock their true potential and transform their lives and businesses.

I just looked at the report section in LSP (which I never do) and it looks that I've had a 39% increase in turnover compared to last year! 😬😱
I really did not expect that! I'm still far away from my desidered income, but still I think this is something to be proud of.
I finished the final draft of my [new service]! Hurray! It even has a video now.

Timeblocking with my Notion tasks, which are linked to my 90-day goals and projects, and reflect what I'm actually doing with my day.
This is Notion Calendar, which shows both my GCal as above and the tasks. It's only Mon/Tue because I did the screenshot last night.
