Oh man I feel this one in my bones! This is so true. I LOVE creating mantras and reminders around this very thing. NO one is forcing us to do anything. We don't have to do ANYTHING. Will there be consequences? Yes. It's still ALWAYS a choice.

So if there's anything […]

📈 Performance

Alright we’ve all read those “perfect morning routine” blogs — exercise, etc. This one has a few additional things we found interesting. The author lists a few of his go-to like getting sunlight. Sounds good. But what we found interesting was found a little lower. Excerpt of that below — still worth grabbing his list because you might find something new for yours!

As Einstein stated:

Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.”

I suspect that Albert wasn’t making his bed when he came up with that thought. He was probably out for a walk in nature and soaking up the early morning sun.

So, if it’s possible and practical, I would recommend not rushing into cognitive processing. Don’t look at your phone or the television, just allow yourself to be. Indeed, meditation is often suggested as another morning routine. But maybe it doesn’t even have to be that formalized. Don’t rush. Just be. Allow yourself to wake up gradually. Not racing into “productive” mode might be, in the end, more productive.

⚙️ Optimization

Could LinkedIn be the next big social media instead of just a list of CVs/resumes? Maybe. This article by Social Media Examiner discusses the latest changes LinkedIn has made in an effort to be a true competitor on the social media landscape. Excerpt of one of our favorites that looks like a great use for business owners both to get more out of the platform and simply to improve productivity by controlling the algorithm. If you haven’t seen our webinar, Fight the Algorithm, check it out here for more on why this change by LinkedIn is so incredibly powerful.

Shareable Filters and Custom News Feeds

LinkedIn is allowing users to create custom news feeds through filters based on their interests and the people they follow. This new feature aims to help users navigate the growing amount of content on the platform and find the posts and contributions that are most relevant to them.

LinkedIn Ads [Expanding]

LinkedIn has expanded its Thought Leader Ads capabilities, allowing advertisers to sponsor content from any member, not just employees, for any Page they manage. According to the 2024 Edelman-LinkedIn B2B Thought Leadership Impact Study, nearly 73% of decision-makers consider an organization's thought-leadership content to be a more trustworthy basis for assessing its capabilities and competencies than its marketing materials and product sheets.

By enabling brands to showcase voices beyond their employees, such as customers and industry experts, LinkedIn provides a new way for companies to reach their target audience with relevant information, including customer testimonials.

⏲️ Time Management

“Forget time management” might be an odd way to start off the time management section, but this article has a point. Sometimes we think we have a time management problem when it’s actually an attention problem. Moreover, Gary V is famous for talking about how “attention” is the next currency and for marketing, we should follow where the attention is so it’s no surprise that attention sinks are everywhere! Below is an excerpt about attention sinks, but the whole article is worth a once-over especially if you struggle in this area at all.

Identifying Attention Sinks

Attention sinks are anything that pulls our focus away from what truly matters. They can be external, like constant electronic notifications, or internal, like negative self-talk. These sinks work like gravity and continuously pull us away from what we should focus on. Attention sinks must be managed, eliminated or curtailed. Common offenders include multitasking, complexity and negative self-talk.

"My mind is like an internet browser. I have 17 tabs open, four of them are frozen, and I don’t know where the music is coming from" is a popular meme that's incredibly appropriate. If your topics are important, then they deserve your full attention. And if they are not important, why are they occupying your attention at all? This might sound simple, but to a point, effective performance is exactly that simple.

Complexity is another attention sink. We take a pending task, decision or problem and surround it with complexity that draws us in far deeper than necessary. One example is the famous, or infamous, menu at the Cheesecake Factory, with over 250 items. Does anyone need 250 items to be able to find one dish, or several, they'd like to eat? How much more energy does it take to make a decision given so many options?

While a restaurant menu is inconsequential, there are plenty of work "menus" with just as much complexity, whether it involves our product portfolio, our pricing options, whom to invite to a meeting, who needs to review the work before a decision and so on. Reducing complexity makes engaging in important work less complex and has the added benefits of reducing cost and increasing quality.

Finally, another attention sink is negative self-talk and worrying. "What if" and "That could have been better" rattle around in your brain, taking your attention away from many other things. Avoiding these attention sinks is a valuable pursuit, but simply processing them and discarding them quickly can be just as useful.
