Helping You Work Smarter and Live More

Just sleep more. You’ve heard it, right? You already know sleep is important. You’ve heard it a thousand times. So you set the goal, “I’m gonna sleep more, eight hours,” and then you either can’t hit it and feel like you’re failing, or you hit it and you still feel exhausted. Somehow, both of these things are your fault.

Here’s the thing nobody’s talking about. You might be chasing the wrong number entirely, and if that’s true, no amount of discipline or earlier bedtimes is gonna fix it. You’re just optimizing for someone else’s biology.

By the end of this post, you’ll have answered five questions I call the Sleep Fingerprint. It’s a diagnostic that tells you whether the sleep advice you’ve been following actually applies to you. One question per section. You can answer each one right now as we go.

Because I dealt with insomnia from 2006, took all the things, including Ambien, and the fix that finally worked wasn’t a supplement or a routine someone else gave me. It was figuring out I’d been asking the wrong questions the whole time.

When you want to use a book example but can't remember the details

If you've ever tried to share a story from a book and realized halfway through that you can't remember the specifics, you're going to relate to this.

I love Switch by Chip and Dan Heath. The whole book is built around case studies that perfectly illustrate how change actually works in the real world. The trouble is that the examples are spread across multiple pages each, and when I want to use one with a client, I can't always remember the exact details.

This is where the Shortform guide saves me:

Three sentences and I have the example clean. I never want to misquote the authors or fudge the specifics of a study, and the guide keeps me honest while still being fast to grab.

If you reference books in your work the way I do, Shortform is worth it for this alone.

More Actionable Breakdowns

Did you miss one of our previous breakdowns? Here are some you might find helpful.

Dreaming of an extra day or two to finally get the important work done? Here's what nobody is telling you: for most freelancers and small business owners, more free time actually makes your productivity worse, not better. Discover why Parkinson's Law is quietly sabotaging your slow seasons, why the gap between hours worked and hours that mattered is bigger than you think, and the simple two-timer experiment that reveals the truth in just one day.

Ever sat down to work with a wide-open calendar and somehow produced nothing? It's not laziness or a focus problem, it's that your brain runs on two completely separate resources, and almost no productivity advice talks about the second one. Discover why "everyone has the same 24 hours" is scientifically wrong, what a scary ER visit taught me about getting meaningful work done under pressure, and the four shifts that will help you match the right work to the right kind of day — even the really hard ones.

You've been nodding along to "choose your hard," but what if that advice is actually the reason your changes never stick? It turns out most behavior isn't driven by willpower at all. It's driven by what feels normal in your environment, and that's why white-knuckling your way through change keeps failing. Discover the science behind social norms, the sneaky way your feed is voting against you, and the three levers you can actually pull to redesign your "normal" so the hard things stop feeling like a daily fight.

As a reminder, you’re getting this twice-weekly newsletter because you opted in to receive awesome productivity and systems tips through one of these methods:

If you’re not interested in improving your and your business’s productivity so you’d like to break up, that’s definitely a bummer. But, you can always use the unsubscribe link at the bottom if you do not want to get these tips — but keep in mind I am hyper-focused on making these twice-weekly emails as valuable as possible.
